It seems like everyone is talking about Twitter these days but whats Twitter you may well ask.  Twitter is a micro blogging social networking website that should be part of your social media strategy for promoting your business online.  Twitter or micro blogging is, writing in text form, what you are doing, which answers Twitter’s catchphrase “what are you doing?”, writing short promotional messages in 140 characters or less that your Twitter followers can then read in their Twitter feed and replying to your Twitter followers messages and interacting with your followers.  These 140 character messages are called tweets.

Still confused?  Then let’s break down the answer to Whats Twitter and why is it so popular?

Running an online business successfully takes time, and if you also are running your business offline too then there are even more demands on your time.  Twitter was revolutionary in it’s approach to social networking in that your updates or micro-blog entries could only be 140 characters in length.  No more worrying about getting the right length of article to write, to make sure it was long enough to get search engine approval and research the keywords to use, here was a system that asked for your updates in 140 characters or less!  Now there was no excuse not to be promoting your business online as gone was the excuse – “I don’t have time”.

In your Twitter profile, you create a link back to your website and a short description of who you and/or your business is.  Your profile name can either be your name, your business name or a keyword relating to your business which will get picked up by the search engines.

When you first join Twitter it may be quite daunting seeing that blank page infront of you, with no followers and you not following anyone.  Again you maybe not only asking “whats Twitter” but “why Twitter and how can it help my business?”

The old saying “you only get out of it, what you put in” is very true with Twitter.  The whole point of Twitter is to get interactive and take an interest in others on Twitter and the rewards will come.

Once you have joined Twitter, then you need to find quality people to follow.  By quality people, I mean those who are interested in what you have to offer, who may have something you are interested in, who are interested in interacting with their followers and DO NOT SPAM you constantly with how to achieve thousands of new followers overnight!  Don’t be fooled into the numbers game with Twitter, it doesn’t work.
